Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is withdrawing from the race for Ireland's head of state with "immediate effect".

He was set to be a candidate among three vying for the role of Irish president, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, on Sunday evening he stated through a declaration that he "committed an error which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I've resolved to exit the election for president right away and reunite with my loved ones," he declared in a statement.
